community education programs
Since we officially rechartered our organization as a nonprofit in January of 2024, we have expanded our mission beyond on-site care to provide unique, engaging, play-based education to the broader community. Our programs are intended to make our own style of engaged learning more accessible to a wider range of folks here in central Austin, particularly those who might not otherwise have access to this kind of creative learning opportunities.
cardboard arcade
For the first time ever, spilled milk social club is offering our beloved Cardboard Arcade summer session as a HUGE community event. We will be inviting kids from across Austin to participate in the largest cardboard creation project we've ever attempted.
Participants will design, construct, and operate their very own arcade and carnival-style game out of cardboard and other recyclable materials over the course of a few weekend workshops. Our trained team of instructors will educate participants in the skills and methods needed to bring their ideas to life.
We plan to provide transportation to these sessions from two East Austin locations to ensure we’re reaching a wider and more diverse range of young folks in our area. After a few weeks of fine tuning, we’ll then host an event and invite the community at large to join in on the fun by playing these awesome inventions. The kids will operate their own machines (often as a part of it!) and guide players through the products of their own critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity.
We’ll also send participants home with crafting toolkits after the arcade to make sure that they can utilize their newfound skills beyond our program as lifelong creators!
spilled milk song club
spilled milk song club is an original songwriting project that brings our popular camp program, OPERATION: Rock N Roll Nation, into the community! Participants are placed into small groups, or bands, that work with local musicians to write and record a song of their own design. This process encourages participants to use their creativity and problem-solving skills in order to communicate effectively, as well as learn and create cooperatively. Our songwriting guides demystify the act of music-making, to empower these young folks to accomplish goals which may otherwise seem impossible. In the end, each band has a professionally recorded song available on streaming platforms to sing along to, dance with, and generally show off.
spilled milk song club launched its pilot program at Blanton Elementary, serving nearly 100 students, completely free to the school and the families involved!
